Alton, Iowa: George E. Bowers, 85, Alton, former newspaper publisher and post master, died Thursday, Dec. 28, [1978] in Orange City Municipal Hospital of brief illness.

Services were at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic Church at Alton. The Rev. Mervin Hood officiated.

Burial was in the parish cemetery under the direction of Van Etten-Oolman Funeral Home at Orange City. The Rosary was recited at 3:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. today in the church.

Mr. Bowers was born April 8, 1893, in Hillsboro, N.D., and came to Alton when he was a child.

He was a veteran of World War I.

He was publisher of the Alton Democrat from 1919 until 1927 and publisher of the Rock Valley Bee in the early 1940's.

He served as Alton postmaster until 1963 when he retired. He was a columnist for the Democrat for 60 years.

He married Clara F. Wathier Aug. 12, 1919, at Alton. She died in April of 1966.

Mr. Bowers was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a 50 year member of the American Legion Floyd post of Alton.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Clara) Hentges of Alton and Mrs. Wayne (Susan) Willer of Phoenix, Ariz.; four sons, George of Stewart [Stuart], Fla., William of Riverside, Calif., John of Iowa City, and Frank of Des Moines; one sister, Miss Mary of Alton; 20 grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.
