MARY L. BOWERS
ALTON, IA. - Services for Mary L. Bowers, 95, of Alton, who died Friday at the Heritage Care Center in Orange City, are tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Van Etten Funeral Home in Orange City. Miss Bowers was the retired editor of the Alton Democrat, where she began her career in 1919, retiring in 1967. She took the helm as editor in about 1940. She also had taught music in schools of Choteau, Mont., and Alton, and attended Drake University in Des Moines and Iowa State University. She was a charter member of the Floyd Post Legion Auxiliary, the Alton Christian Science Church and the Alton-Orange City chapter of the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was named Woman of Achievement by the Sioux City Sunday Journal in 1948. Miss Bowers is survived by nephews and nieces.
