John's surname was originally Roelofson or Rulifson and is spelled various ways. John's descendants usually spell it Rulason. He was Probably born about 1795 in Hunterdon County, NJ.

John Rulason married Margaret Frone, daughter of John Frone and Eve Hendershot on 23 Oct 1817 in Morris County, NJ. They had two known children, Sylvester b. abt. 1823 and Frederick b. abt 1830 in NJ. The family had apparently left NJ by 8 July 1835 when a local paper reported that John had a letter waiting at the Geneseo post office. In the 1840 census they were still living at Geneseo, Livingston County, NY.

John died 3 Jul 1845 and is buried in Erwin Cemetery, Springwater, Livingston County, NY. His age at death was perhaps 49-3-11. The stone was nearly illegible so this is not certain. John's two sons both died as young men. Frederick died in the Civil War from disease at Richmond, Virginia. Sylvester died in 1856 and is buried next to his father. Both left descendants who now live primarily in Michigan.
