In 1930 he and his parents lived with his mother's father and brother in a house they owned at 145 Neal Avenue in Newark, OH. Their home was valued at $3800, and they did have a radio. His grandfather worked as a brakeman for a railroad and his father as a tire builder at a rubber works.

In 1940 he and his parents and two siblings lived in a house they were renting for $25 a month at 78 North Eighth Street in Newark. His father still worked as a tire builder at a rubber tire factory, with an income in 1939 of $2000 for 52 weeks of work. His mother worked as a waitress in a restaurant, with an income in 1939 of $162 for 18 weeks of work.
