Member of the Phoenix Rifles and took part in the bombardment of Fort Sumter. He accompanied Manigault in the campaign in the West and it was there the seed was sowed of the disease from which he never recovered. He returned to Charleston due to his illness. Only day sick at heart from the ramparts of Battery Wagner he saw the cannon shot of the Confederate artillerists rebound from the Ironsides, then the greatest war vessel in the world, like marbles from a stone wall. He returned to the city, and after a conference with Dr. St. Julien Ravenel and Lieut. W. T. Glassell, of the Confederate navy, authorized Dr. Ravenel to construct a torpedo boat at his expense. Dr. Ravenel had given the subject much study, and under his direction the David, the first torpedo boat of it's kind in the world, was built at Stoney Landing, on Cooper River. The boat cost Mr. Stoney $20,000.
