The son of Abraham & Anna Isenberger (as it was most often spelled), in 1860 he was a laborer living in Providence Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 4" tall and had sandy hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster November 7, 1861, as a private with Co. K, 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry (80th Pa). He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer November 28, 1863, at Huntsville, Alabama, and honorably discharged with his company August 23, 1865.

His wife's name was Anna Maria "Annie"
