William R. Davis, Freestone County's last surviving Confederate soldier, died at the Veteran's Home in Austin. He was raised in Freestone County, Texas. He joined the Confederate Army when a boy, going with a company organized in Fairfield. His funeral in Austin was attended by his grandson, William Davis.
