She worked as a nurse in Bakersfield, California, until 1966, when she returned to Louisiana, working for Glenwood Hospital in West Monroe, retiring in 1980 from G.B. Cooley Hospital in West Monroe.
In 2006, she left her home in Monroe to live with her son in Woodsville, NH.
Surviving are her son, Charles E. Martin of Woodsville, NH; a sister, Geneva Robinson of San Antonio, TX; and two grandchildren, Rachelle Rennagel of Los Angeles, CA; and Christophe DeGregory, of Portland, ME.
Mae was predeceased by her first husband, Ernest E. Martin, in 1978, and her second, Thomas B. Smith, in 1988.
