John Matheys served in the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was elected Captain and continued in command for about 25 years. He was also elected to the State Senate in 1831 and served from 1832to 1835. When re retired, his son, William Z. Matheys served as Captain and was said to have been a brilliant officer and the troop was in high command while under his comand which continued until 1839, David Z Matheys was the First Orderly Sergeant.
