Agness Mitchell was the daughter of James Mitchell and the step daughter of Martha Mitchell ("brother Jas Mitchell's testimony in Court Order book"). She married William Ledgerwood, likely in current day Northern Ireland (then just named Ireland). They passed through Pennsylvania before settling in Virginia.

Her dates are unknown. It looks like Agness' brother, James Mitchell sued his Mitchell siblings for his share of his mother Martha’s acquired 260 acres from about "1739." James and his brother David, inherited it in his mother’s will. It appears Agness died PRIOR to Aug 1791, since she had 2 family members represent her (see below). Verify.

I found a lot of Ledgetwods, Lidgertwoods and Legerwoods in Scotland. Plus I found 5 Mitchells on the early local SW Beverley Manor maps/deeds: David; Eleanor, Thomas, John and Martha and a few Mitchells were listed as witnesses on below documents. She died sometime after 2 Apr 1768, when her name is last mentioned in found documents.

Agness and WIlliam had Ledgerwood children (5 were on the 1739 oaths of importation, below) though others may have been born later in Virginia:

MARTHA, "Mrs. Jas OR Saml Patterson, went to KY or NC"
JANE, 20 Dec 1734 (John Moffett), below
ELEANOR, believed moved to KY
WILLIAM, Jr., abt 1723 ( Rebecca Moody) Will Bk #1 p 14, proved 23 Jan 1794 in Fayette Co., KY
JAMES, baptized 1740, "wife Miss Pierce, moved to KY," below
JOHN, died 1806, below

1739, William, Agnes, plus 5 others (likely their children) above stated they came from (not born in) Ireland as they proved their Oaths of Importation in Orange Co., VA (his land later became Augusta Co., VA). It reads: At a court for Orange County on Thursday the 28th day of February 1739 William Ledgerwood made oath that he imported himself, Agnes, Martha, Jane, Elener, William and James Ledgerwood from Ireland to Philadelphia, and from thence into this colony, and that this is the first time of his proving his or their rights in order to obtain land (head rights for about 50 acres per person). Augusta Co., VA Order Book #2,1739-41, p 109, (Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 26, #3, Aug 1988, plus same in other issues).

BOTETOURT COUNTY VIRGINIA ORDER BOOK (1788-1792 on the spine), filmed 18 May 1953 by the Genealogical Society of Utah, p 432. Film # 007893757 on Familysearch. Another site states it was in “book 8B” but the original does not state a number on the film site, book spine, nor inside that I could locate. The cover of the book is dark and aged, little is legible. Only one of the individual records on page 432 is dated. The top of page says “Thursday the 11th of August 1791” (the 1 looks like a 4) for another case. Dates on nearby pages: 431 - 10 Aug 1791; p 433 - no dates. p 434 - 19 Aug 1791. So the following transcribed doc was recorded on ABOUT 11 (and before 19) Aug 1791 (see photo). I believe it says:
"James Mitchell ag’st (against) Pltf (Plaintiff)
In Chan’y (Chancery)
Defts (Defendants, in bracket)
Samuel Paterson & Martha his Wife. John Moffet & Jane his Wife
representatives of Agnefs Ledgerwood deceased (formerly Agnefs Mitchell)
William, James, John, Margaret, Martha & Sarah Brownlee, William
Reah (or Reak?) & Elizabeth his Wife, William Mitchell & Agnefs his Wife & James
Brownlee) only Ifsue of Alexander Brownlee deceased), who were representatives
of Sarah Brownlee dec’d (formerly Sarah Mitchell), James Tate & John Tate
representatives of Elizabeth Tate decd (formerly Elizabeth Mitchell), D."

"This Cause was this day heard upon the Bill & Answer, the Deposition taken and & Released
the Arguments of the Counsels on both sides. In consideration whereof, It is decreed and
Ordered that the Complainant James Mitchell, is entitled to the Two hundred & sixty Acres
of Land in the Bill mentioned. That the Defendants convey to the Complainant the
Title vested in them by surfaize? (surveys?). And that the Defendants pay to the Complainant
his Costs by him in this behalf expended.
The Defendant John Tate prayed & obtained an Appeal from the above
Decree to the high Court of Chancery, & with John Allen & David Henderson his Securities
entered into & acknowledged Bond according to Law."

It is believed William came to then Orange Co., VA sometime prior to 13 Sep 1738 when land in his name was surveyed (George Hume's Old Field Book of Surveys, 1732-1739, #68, Orange Co. Deed Book 3, p 208 & Chalkley's Vol 2 p 375) and on 28 Feb 1739, it was deeded to him by Wm Beverley. He purchased 387 acres on 20 Feb 1739, in the Beverley Patent for ₤11,12 shillings and 2 pence. William Ledgerwood Sr's tract is shown on J.R. Hildebrand's 1954 SW section of the Beverley Patent-1736 map. Plus his son, William, Jr's 300 acres in 1751, on JRH's Beverley map of NW Orange Co., both BEFORE it became Augusta Co.

I see several sites that say he settled in Orange Co., VA (that part, became Augusta Co.) "on the North River about 6 miles east of Lexington" where he had grants of land from the government.

Below NOTE paragraphs in parenthesis are for son Wm Ledgerwood, JUNIOR, due to neighbors, etc. There may be others below as well.

(In 1747 Wm Junior's neighbors included: John Linn, Robert YOUNG ?, John Henderson, Saml DOWNEY, Wm Nutt, Jas McCorkle, Alexander McPHEETERS, Jas Gilmore, Robt Davies and Wm and Jas Bell. It was then described as on the headwaters of Jennings Creek, Nutt's Creek, Buchanan's Creek and located about 1 1/4 mile NE of Bethel Presbyterian Church (from Augusta Co. Processioned lands record).)

The names on J.R. Hildebrand's 1954 map of the SW section of the Beverley Patent 1736, of original grantees list these neighbors after Wm Senior's 1739 deeded lot: it was surrounded by Arthur Hamilton in 1741; Alexander Campbell in 1744; Jas Callison 1749; John Wilson in 1749; John Buntine (and misc. spellings of surname) in 1772. His 1739 lot is rectangular shaped on this map, kind of unusual for this time period, but there are a few.

The State Historical Society of Wisconsin has the original copy of the Augusta Co., VA Militia Roster, called No. 9 - Captain John Wilson's List, which ends with "...William Leadgerwood, preceded by 46 other men from their area in the Beverley Manor along Little North Mountain in "Sep" 1742." He also served under Captain James Lockhart in the 9th Company. William was reimbursed for provisions, in the amount of 11s, 4 d. (RTG)

The 20 May 1873, issue of the Staunton Spectator (see photo on right), includes William Ledgerwood's 387 acres in the Orange County, in the Beverley Manor, dated 20 Feb 1739. Also on the list is John Moffett and Martha Mitchell.

William Ledgerwood served as a Captain, in the local Orange/Augusta Virginia Militia in the Indian Wars in 1742 to 1744, 1753 and in the French and Indian War 1754 - 1761. He was discharged on 30 Oct 1761 at age 60 (born ABOUT 1701), see below. Lyman Chalkley's Chronicles of a Scotch-Irish Settlement, Vol. 2, p 509, Musters of Augusta Co. "Wm Leadgerwood." He is mentioned in Dr. Howard McKnight Wilson's Tinkling Springs Headwaters of Freedom, Vol. 1, 1954.

It is unknown IF he made contributions of goods to Revolutionary War efforts but if he was here then, most likely did. He was obviously too old to serve now.

(10 Jul 1785, (same land as 1780 above) Wm Ledgerwood, KY land surveyed for Wm Ledgerwood/Lagerwood 500 acres by a treasury warrant #2496, dated 17 Aug 1784 in Fayette Co, on Licking Crick, adjoining Daniel Boone on the NW, and Daniel M. Boone and Jesse B. Boone witness document (explorer Col. Daniel Boone's sons are Daniel M. and Jesse B.). 29 Feb 1789, the last known recorded document by William is a Augusta County Deed Book 29, p 305 transferring all of Ledgerwood's land to John Grim. He was likely infirm here, as his grandson, William Moffett executed the document on his behalf. Prior to this, he most often signed his documents himself. Missing is the listing of his wife, Agnes. It appears she had passed prior to this date. Was Grim, connected with William's family, a daughter born in VA perhaps? (RTG)

(4 Dec 1792, William Ledgerwood, "a prominent member of Bethel (Presbyterian Church) was among those who were chosen to solicit funds" for the prospective Staunton Academy. Bethel and Her Ministers, 1746 - 1974 by Rev. Herbert S. Turner & Rev. James Sprunt, 1974, p 75.) Suspect this was William, Jr.

Sources Lyman Chalkley's Chronicles of a Scotch-Irish Settlement in VA, Misc. deeds in Orange and Augusta Co., VA, Library of VA, Bethel and Her Ministers, by Herbert S Turner, 1946, "State Historical Society of Wisconsin," and Reese T. Grubert 1937 (FaG 38048202), includes more data on Agness's children.

RTG points out that William was a member of the North Mountain Meeting House and upon it's closing, he became involved with Bethel Presbyterian Church. The Bethel Cemetery came about in 1806, so the North Mountain Burying Ground is a likely candidate for both Agnes and William's final resting place, although it is undocumented. (Note: However, They could also be on his homestead. Was it William Sr. or Jr., who was connected with Bethel.)

Her exact burial location is unknown. It has not been proven to my knowledge (nor has husband William's at "North Mountain" per LRTS's site). Wm and Agness are not listed on the large memorial stone on site at North Mountain Burying Ground, nor various surveys taken there. Now son James has been added to North Mountain (Rev.L) and is also not documented there. Still seeking burial for all three. Please share IF you do.

Her grandson James Ledgerwood is buried at Ledgerwood Cemetery in Carlisle, IN (FaG #32734716). His marker there says: JAMES LEDGERWOOD, 14 VA REGT, KY MILITIA, REV WAR, 1753, 1806. James is listed on the battle memorial at Blue Licks State Park, in Robertson Co., KY (FaG #40874606).

Agness Mitchell was the daughter of James Mitchell and the step daughter of Martha Mitchell ("brother Jas Mitchell's testimony in Court Order book"). Her dates are unknown. It looks like Agness' brother, James Mitchell sued his Mitchell siblings for his share of his mother Martha’s acquired 260 acres from about "1739." Agness and WIlliam had Ledgerwood children (5 were on the 1739 oaths of importation, below) though others may have been born later in Virginia:

1739, William, Agnes, plus 5 others (likely their children) above stated they came from (not born in) Ireland as they proved their Oaths of Importation in Orange Co., VA (his land later became Augusta Co., VA).
