MRS. SLAY DEAD

At an early hour last Thursday morning, Mrs. Mattie Slay died at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Fausett in this place, where she had made her home since the latter's marriage, Mrs. Fausett being her only child. Mrs. Slay had been in declining health for several years and was an invalid the last year or two of her life. But during all this time she was the recipient of the most tender ministrations of the devoted family and kind neighbors.

Mrs. Slay was one of the oldest residents of Roanoke, having spent her life in this vicinity since girlhood. She was born Jan. 2, 1831 and was the daughter of the late Captain B.H. Ford. Her husband, Andrew J. Slay, died of measles
in the Confederate Army. Since 18 years of age she has been a consecrated member of the Methodist church. She illustrated in life the christian graces of faith and fortitude, humility and resignation. Her influence in the home and the community will abide as a sweet incense forever.

Friday morning at 10 o'clock the funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church. Rev. R.W. Anderson delivered a fitting eulogy of the deceased and spoke comforting words to the living. The interment was in the city cemetery.
