San Francisco Mayor. A native of Kentucky, Brenham started working on the riverboats of the Mississippi River at a young age. In 1849 he went to California where he became captain of the steamer McKim traveling between San Francisco and Sacramento. In 1850 he made an unsuccessful campaign for Mayor of San Francisco. In May 1851 he was elected the second Mayor of San Francisco serving until December of that year when he was removed from office due to confusion caused by a new city charter. In 1852 he was appointed Treasurer of the United States Mint, but declined the position. In November 1852 he was reelected the fourth Mayor of San Francisco, serving until October 1853. In 1872 he was appointed a Commissioner of Golden Gate Park.

Gravesite Details

When the Catholic Cemetery (Calvary) in San Francisco closed, Charles was removed to Santa Clara Mission Cemetery.
