S/SGT. William Overmire was the Radio Operator on the B-29 #42-63423 "Were Wolf" of the 20th AAF, 497th BG (H), 870th BS. Departed Saipan, Marianas Islands on 27th January 1945 for a bombing mission of the Musachina Aircraft Engine Factory, Tokyo, Japan. The weather was poor 8/10. The squadron was attacked with heavy anti aircraft flak and enemy fighters. A enemy J1N1 Irving fighter shot down the bomber causing a fire in the bomb bay area. According to the MACR #11620 The Bomber exploded mid-air, into 2 pieces and crashed near Shbazee, Dugenji, Fujinomiya City. No parachutes were seen.
Later records record that 4 persons were killed in the crash, 7 personnel bailed out. 3 parachutes failed to open. 4 were captured and became POW's. S/SGT. Overmire was killed in action (KIA) it is unclear if he died in the crash or if his chute failed. His remains were recovered from a common grave in Fujinomiya after the war and reinterred in the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky, United States. He was posthumously awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart.


Grave is located in section B, 2nd drive toward the back, on right side of the drive.
