Carmella Abbati, age 92, died August 9, 2004 at Monterey Convalescent Hospital after a courageous, 10 year struggle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Born March 30, 1912 in Chicago, she was one of 10 surviving children born to John and Lucia Abbati.

Carmella was the Loving wife for 71 years to the late Joseph Abbati. She was also the loving Mother of daughter Maryann and Son-in-law Peter Torrente of Monterey, daughter Lucia and son-in-law Damen Birtola of San Jose, and the cherished grandmother of Gerry and Peter Guerra, Mario and Amy Torrente, Carmella and Bruce Blackmon, all of Monterey. Jimmy Birtola, Anna and Pat Warner, Joey and Karen Birtola and Carmella Birtola all of San Jose. Carmella has 16 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She is survived by 6 sisters, Annie Incaviglia, Mary Indorado and Josephine Cutrufelli all of Monterey. Lucy Ruccello of Seaside, Genevieve Giammanco of Del Rey Oaks, and Lena Carine of Fort Bragg.

She was Preceded in death by sisters, Rose Lonero, Virginia Campo and her Brother, Anthony Abbati.

Carmella loved to cook and especially enjoyed baking her family's favorite Christmas cookies, embroidery and gardening. She was an exceptional homemaker. A devout Catholic, she was a member of the San Carlos Cathedral Parish. Her family will miss her dearly.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 pm. Monday, August 16th at Mission Mortuary. Rosary will be recited at pm. Monday at the Mortuary. Mass will be celebrated at 9:30am Tuesday, August 17th at San Carlos Cathedral, With burial services to follow at San Carlos Cemetery.
