The body of Mrs. Lydia McGill, 53, was recovered Sunday evening from the McKenzie River about six miles east of Vida.
Coroner Fred Buell said an autopsy Monday morning indicated drowning was the cause of death. He said Mrs. McGill had apparently fallen into the river at the Hawthorne Cottages on Highway 58, which she had owned and operated.
The body floated about 2 1/2 miles downstream before it was recovered by river guide Prince Helfrich, who was called to the scene by state police. The police were notified of the drowning after two boys, Michael Lowery, McKenzie Bridge, and Kenneth Taylor, Nimrod, saw the body floating near the Nimrod Bridge.
State police said the porch of one of the Hawthorne Cottages extends out over the river, and Mrs. McGill might have fallen from the porch.
Mrs. McGill was the widow of Dr. Paul McGill, who died last October in Minnesota. She is survived by a brother, Lester Shelton (Leslie Sheldon), who had been staying with her at the Hawthorne Cottages.
