When Priscilla was born, there were already four older brothers and no sisters. She was named after her mother's sister. The family moved from Alcolu to Sumter in 1909.

The photo shows her as a little girl held by her father in his new 1906 Buick being driven by her brother, Ervin David Shaw. Viewer's left to right in back seat are brothers Gifford, Whit, & D. C., Jr.; & a helper, Frank, is behind them.

Her grade school education was in Sumter where she graduated with the class of 1921, Sumter High School . Then she went off to the Sargent School of Boston University (class of 1925) & finished graduate work at Boston U. in 1937.

She taught & was physical education teacher in Sumter city schools 14 years (1925-39); and she owned and operated her own summer camp at Roaring Gap, NC...Camp Silver Pines for Girls...from 1929-1950. Her close friend in running the camp was Miss Lyons. On closing the camp, she built a summer home in Roaring Gap.

Becoming the first female elected to Sumter city council in 1950, Priscilla was subsequently the first female mayor in the history of South Carolina, elected as Sumter's mayor in 1952 & serving 6 years. Although I remember her well, I did not know her. My biggest memory was that, during her years in office, Sumter installed a type of horn (not a siren) that blew atop the building signaling that firetrucks had left the fire department for an emergency. People called the sound, "Priscilla's Bull".

She never married. She was a Christian and member of First Presbyterian Church and also a member of a number of civic clubs such as the Pilot Club. Her extended family showed up at her retreat in Roaring Gap for a wonderful surprise 75th birthday party. Her nieces and nephews knew her her as "Aunt Cilla". In Dec. 1980, she suffered a heart attack & died in Feb. 1981 at Providence Hospital in Columbia, S. C. . Her Wikipedia page is HERE (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martha_Priscilla_Shaw).
