Calvin was born in Madill, OK on June 29, 1924 to the parents of Odie and Anna English-Morrow. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three siblings. Calvin grew up on a farm in Oklahoma with an uncle and aunt, as his parents both passed when he was very young.

He enlisted in the Marine Corp. in San Diego in 1942. He served during WWII from 1942-1946. He then returned to his sister's farm in Lancaster, CA. where he met his bride, Johnie Martha Hanks.
