Matt Hanzlik, one of the hardy pioneers of Pope and Douglas Counties, passed away at him home in Lake Mary Township, Tuesday, September 25th, at the age of 79 years. He had been ill about a year with heart trouble. Matt Hanzlik was born in Vienna Austria, September 15, 1855. He immigrated to America with his parents, sisters and one brother in 1869. He worked hauling freight with friends from one fort to another, winter and summer, driving a team of oxen. He earned his own living from the time he came to America at the age of 13 years. He made many trips to Canada in stormy weather with the Bryce boys and endured the hardships of the pioneer days, He settled first in Pope County and lived there until 1907 when he moved to Lake Mary Township, which was his home at the time of his death. Fifty-three years ago on September 15, 1881, he was united in marriage to Anna Dvorsak at the Reno Catholic Church. Besides his wife he leaves to mourn his loss, two children: Anton Hanzlik and Mrs. Frank Trousil, thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren; also one brother Tom Hanzlik, living in Montana. His parents, three sisters and three brothers have preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at one o'clock from the home, Rev. R. E. Johnston of Villard officiating.
