Dr. Thomas E. Steele drew his last quiet breath early Wednesday morning, March 6, 2013, at 4 a.m. at Kathy Care Hospice. Dr. Steele and his wife Doris moved to an assisted living home in Cartersville after experiencing declining health. The years had taken away many physical abilities from Doc but he never lost the "raise" his eyebrow in surprise, the wink at the inside knowledge of a joke, or his gentle healing touch. He became a favorite wherever he went. His assisted living family and staff at Star Manor mourn him. Dr. Steele was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Mahala Griffin Steele; his siblings, Chester, Bessie, W.S., Angus and Warner.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Doris Womble Steele; his four children, Dr. Bob Steele (Lani), Dr. Linda Denham (Barney), Dr. Tim Steele (Laurie); and Tommy Steele; his 10 grandchildren, Lori, Tory, Greg, Jennifer, Gretchen, Jessica, Robin, Brian, Taylor and Gage; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He is also survived by his brothers Paul (Carolyn) and Earl (Nannette); numerous nieces and nephews.
Dr. Steele was born in Abbeville, Ala. He moved to Hampton, Ga., during his childhood. He graduated from Hampton High School in 1946, served in the Army as a corporal, and graduated from Palmer Chiropractic College in 1961. After graduating from college, Doc brought his family to live in Hampton, the hometown he cherished. He knew everyone in town and loved to reminisce about his childhood. He often told stories, which were later determined to be myth, about plowing many fields near his family home. He may have also added he walked five miles to school. Everyone loved Doc and will recount stories of him whistling down the halls at the office he shared with Tim, planting the countless knock out roses for Doris, square dancing throughout Georgia with countless friends, stopping by the corner store every day for the newspaper and conversation. He was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church and the Hampton Masonic Lodge. He loved to read and drive fast.
Visitation for Dr. Tom Steele will be Saturday, March 9, from 4-7 p.m. at Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough. The funeral will be Sunday, March 10, at 2 p.m. at the Hampton United Methodist Church. He will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. Mark Burgess will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt Carmel UMC Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions made be made to Hampton United Methodist Church, 10 W. Main Street, Hampton, Ga. 30228 in memory of Dr. Steele.
