Born in Guilford, Ct., March 14,1 814, son of Rev. Aaron and Dorcas (Southmayd)Dutton. From Sept. 1833 to Sept. 1834, Teacher of Latin and Greek in Mount Hope College, Baltimore, Md.; from Sept. 1834 to Sept. 1835, Principal of Hopkins Grammar Sch0ol in New Haven. From Sept. 1835 to April 1838, student of Theology in New Haven. From April 1836 to April 1838, Tutor in Yale College. Married, Sept 12, 1838, by his classmate Buckingham, at Millbury, Mass. to Harriet Waters, daughter of Asa and Susan (Holman) Waters. Published in 1842, History of the North Church in New Haven during the last century,. Since Jan 1843 one of the Assoc Editors of the New Englander and a frequent contributor to its pages. " Received his Doctor of Divinity from Brown University.

"After his marriage in 1838 to Harriet, the Duttons dedicated themselves to abilitionism. At the Dutton home at 113 College Street, they listened for a coded knock at the door. Escapees bathed and ate and then slept in the attic undil dark when it was safe to continue to Chester, Deep River, or Southington on the New England-Canada route of the secret network. Dutton and his collaborators provided a legal defense and moral support to 35 surviving mutineers from the slave ship Amistad."
