This memorial commemorates the life of Conrad Miller. He was a butcher by trade. Conrad lived in Carmi, Illinois until about 1883, then moved to Oklahoma by way of Ft.Smith, Arkansas. He was married twice, first to Barbary Shoemaker and then to Hannah Jane Howell. He resided in Carmi, IL; Hackett, AR; Kully Chaha, OK; Talihina, OK; Spencer, OK; Elk City, OK.

Married to Barbary Shoemaker on 25 Dec 1848 in White County, IL, by Jonathon D. Jamerson. While married to Barbary Shoemaker he fathered Barbara Ellen, William F., Annie Mary, and Catherine Miller.

Enumerated 3 July 1855 White County, IL state census, Carmi Township 5 South, Range 9 E, Section 8, where he farmed about 280 acres. He also owned lot 66 in East Carmi. He owned lot 21 in the original plat of Carmi. He owned a portion of lot 105 in Carmi. Property purchases can be located in Book 2, page 351; Book 23, page 493; Book 15, pages 514 and 515 and Book 26, pages 56-58 and page 535.

Also in 1855, he and Martin Beck were the court appointed administrators of the estate of William Miller (no known relationship). He and Martin Beck were neighbors within the same township as William Miller.

Married Hannah Jane Howell 2 Feb 1857 in White County, IL.

21 Apr 1858, from the book "History of White County Illinois" he was first trustee and organizer of the Christian Church of Carmi.

Enumerated in the 1860 White County, IL census living near Carmi.

While married to Hannah J. Howell he fathered Elizabeth, Clara P., George Edward, Lucy (Find A Grave Memorial# 121995300), and Julia B. Miller.

Enumerated in the 1865 Illinois State census in Carmi next door to James C Howell, (who was the father of his second wife Hannah) and son-in-law Alexander Hall Howell.

Enumerated in the 1870 White County, IL census. Also enumerated the 1863, 1865, 1866 and 1870 Agricultural censuses living in Carmi, and owning many cattle, sheep, swine and other such livestock.

1873 elected Marshal and Street Superintendent of Carmi, Illinois.

March 7, 1879, charter member of Knights of Pythias, Carmi, IL Lodge 82.

Enumerated in the 1880 White County, IL census living in Carmi.

6 Jul 1896 he applied for a military pension. Conrad was a Corporal in I Company, 1st IL Cavalry, Union Army during the Civil War. Filed for pension #1179080 in Arkansas for service in I Company of Illinois Cavalry, US Civil War.

20 June 1900, enumerated in the 1900 Oklahoma County, OK census living in the home of daughter Annie and son-in-law Alexander Howell, of Crutcho and Hartzell townships.

Died after 20 Jun 1900. No death certificate exists, after a thorough search of the Oklahoma State Vital Records. Family lore indicates he may have died in Fort Smith, AR.

Legal records indicate he was deceased prior to 28 Feb 1902.

An article in The Spencer News newspaper, dated 9 Oct 1903 states, "Mrs. A.H. Howell and sisters have ordered a five foot "white bronze" monument and urn to be erected at the grave of their father in the Kolb cemetery. The white bronze monuments are made by the Western White Bronze Monumental company of Des Moines, Iowa and are said to be very beautiful."

As of 23 Dec 2020, his grave has yet to be located.
