July 31, 1857 - March 27, 1928
Lewis Delp was the 10th and youngest child of Adam and Catharine (Nigh) Delp. He was born 31 July 1857. He was of medium build with very dark eyes and hair with a dark complexion. Later in life he had full black beard.
In 1866 when he was 9 years old, his father died leaving his mother with six of the ten children to make a living at farming.
After his marriage to Malissa, Lewis purchased 100 acres of farm ground in 1883. (After more than 133 years, this farmland is still in the Delp family). To begin with they lived in a log cabin. A picture of the log cabin shows a sweep pole used to raise water out of the well.
In 1888, Lewis built and moved his family into a large 2 story, 8 room frame house on the same property. The house burned in 1934 and was never rebuilt.
Lewis was considered a very respected farmer for over 45 years. He was a livestock breeder of hogs, cattle & sheep. His livestock always won many prizes at the county fair. This was also true of Malissa with her prizes for her fruits, vegetables, pies and cakes.
Lewis died March 27,1928 of heart failure, two years before their 50th wedding anniversary would have taken place. He is buried in the Greenup, Illinois Cemetery.
