Frederick Mills was born at Bangor, Maine, the son of William H. Mills and Sarah A. Sargent (1850, 1860 US Census). He was a 21-year-old farmer residing at Bangor when he enlisted as a private at Boston, Massachusetts, June 1, 1864, and was mustered into the 13th Independent Battery, Massachusetts Light Artillery. Private Mills was mustered out at Boston July 28, 1865. After the war Fred moved to Colorado where he filed for a Civil War veteran's pension October 6, 1892 and received application No. 1,133,750 and certificate No. 938,866. Soon thereafter he moved to Iowa where enlisted to serve in the Spanish-American War. He was mustered into Company D, 51st Iowa Infantry, May 1, 1898, and mustered out July 10, 1899. Fred soon moved to Santa Cruz, California, where he registered to vote and about 1901 married the widow, Mrs. Czarina A. Smith (maiden name unknown; 1855, CA-aft. 1930)(1900 Santa Cruz Great Register). Frederick became a member of Wallace-Reynolds Post, No. 32, Grand Army of the Republic. He appears with Czarina at their home in Santa Cruz in 1910 and 1920 (1910, 1920 US Census). Fred was buried in this cemetery by his Grand Army comrades. After his death Czarina filed for a Civil War widow's pension October 12, 1922, and received application No. 1,197,115 and certificate No. 939,956 (Pension File, NARA). Czarina's father was born in Canada and her mother in Vermont. She married (1) (unknown) Schmidt ("Smith"; born Germany-bef. 1900, CA), with whom she had 6 children, 5 of whom were still alive in 1910 (1910 US Census).

PASSING OF FREDERICK MILLS
Frederick Mills died on Monday [4th] at his home after an illness. Mr. Mills was 78 years old and a native of Maine. The body is at Chase's undertaking parlors. He was an old soldier and a member of the G.A.R.

FUNERAL OF FREDERICK MILLS
The funeral service s over Frederick Mills was held yesterday afternoon from Chase's undertaking parlors and were under the auspices of Wallace-Reynolds post, G.A.R., of which he was a member. The service of the G.A.R. was conducted and the Woman's Relief Corps sang "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul," with Miss Luella Blanchard at the piano.
