John L. Allen Dies Suddenly Saturday P. M.
Taylor County's Health Administrator and president of the local Junior Chamber of Commerce, John L. Allen, died Saturday afternoon at 3:05 at the Rosary Hospital. Death was attributed to a cerebral hemorrhage. At 9 o'clock Saturday morning, 33 year old Allen was downtown having coffee with friends. He also dropped by the health office on his way home telling the staff nurse, Mrs. Doris Reese, that he must get on his way home to do some work on his yard. The Allen's had just moved into a new home on Hoskins Avenue and there was still quite a lot of work to be done on the yard and back porch. Shortly after 10 o'clock he went into the house and told his wife he felt quite dizzy. Mrs. Allen had him sit down and said she would call a doctor when she turned back around he had slumped over in his chair. He was rushed to the Rosary Hospital and doctors, sisters and nurses worked with him constantly until the end came at 3:05 in the afternoon. Allen, who was born May 5, 1923 in Washington County, Kentucky, attended graded and high school in Springfield. He entered the U. S. Army on February 10, 1913 and received an honorable discharge on April 1, 1946. While in the service on June 8, 1944, he and Georgianna Durrett, a Campbellsville girl, were married. They lived in Portland, Oregon until his discharge in April 1946. One son, John Durrett Allen, was born while they were in Oregon. After his discharge, he entered Campbellsville Junior College and was graduated from Western State College in Bowling Green in 1949. While in school, another son, Jeffrey, was born. After graduation, he accepted a position as assistant coach and teacher at the Glasgow High School. He taught in the Campbellsville High School during the 1951-52 school term and went to work as Sanitarian for the Taylor County Health Department on July 1, 1952. On July 1, 1954 he was advanced to Health Administrator, the position he held at the time of his death. He was much in demand as a speaker at the city and county schools, local civic clubs and public health meetings. He worked many long and tireless hours during the 1955 March of Dimes campaign, serving as chairman of the drive. He also assisted in the 1956 campaign and never ceased in his determination to educate the Taylor County people in the advantages of the Salk polio vaccine and its effectiveness in protecting against paralytic polio. On February 27 of this year he was elected as president of the Campbellsville Jaycees and immediately plunged head-on into several projects to aid the youth of our town. During the past two weeks the Jaycees spurred on by Allen have been hard at work promoting and trying to start a Little League baseball club for the young boys of our community. A member of the Campbellsville Presbyterian Church, he was very active in all church activities and Sunday School work. He was also a member of Edwards O'Banion Post 82 American Legion. Survivors include his wife and two sons, John Durrett Allen, 11, and Robert Jeffrey Allen, 9; his mother, Mrs. Carrie Neal Allen of Springfield; three sisters, Mrs. Leon Crume, Orlando, Florida, Mrs. Joe Mattingly, Springfield, and Mrs. Leonard Comstock, Lebanon; one half-brother, Robert Craven of Blue Field, West Va.; and one half-sister, Miss Leona Allen of Springfield.
