Luby Elton Carman
(June 24, 1920 - November 29, 2011)

Viewing Wednesday December 7, 2011 10AM at Tabernacle Baptist Church located at 2080 West Grand Blvd. Funeral Services will follow at 11AM. Interment: Acacia Park Cemetery. Born June 24, 1920 in Mound City, IL, Luby Elton Carman was the middle child born to Luby and Grace (Stovall) Carman. He preferred using his middle name, Elton, which most people called him throughout his life. Elton attended school in Mound City and graduated from Lovejoy High School in 1938. He moved to Chicago, for greater job opportunities through the WPA (Works Projects Administration) training program. Securing work in Chicago fulfilled his employment needs; however, his enjoyment of music, singing in particular, was met with membership in the Chicago Umbrian Glee Club. The Glee Club, that Elton loved dearly, provided him a social, cultural outlet for musical expression for nearly 45 years. At 23 years old, Elton was inducted into the US Army on Jan 6, 1944 where he served until his honorable discharge on May 4, 1946. He returned to his home in Mound City to be of assistance to his mom and grandmother. It was through church attendance that he met 23 year old Juanita Chenault, a high school teacher in Mound City, whom he would marry on March 24, 1948. Elton returned to Chicago and later welcomed the birth of two daughters, Anita Yvonne and Viola Grace over the next five years. The young family, led by Elton who worked as a clothing tailor and hospital orderly in the early years of marriage called Chicago home for over 30 years. During these years Elton also worked 17 years as a Postal Clerk for the US Post Office, retiring in 1975. Liberated from the rigors of "punching the work clock", Elton pursued part time work as a Chicago real estate sales agent and as a messenger for Smith Barney Brokerage in downtown Chicago. This became a time for fulfilling his life pleasures, traveling with Juanita annually to family reunions, sharing his love of music through song together with Juanita while visiting senior citizen homes, visiting Jamaica with friends, living briefly in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, and most importantly spending family time with his daughters and their young families. A special memorable occasion was enjoyed during Christmas (1978)and New Years (1979) when each of his daughters' families spent the holiday respectively with Elton and Juanita in St Thomas. Although St Thomas was a wonderful cultural experience, the need to be geographically closer to their children and grandchildren brought Elton and Juanita stateside; first with a return to Chicago then briefly to Mt Sterling, KY(Juanita's childhood home)and ultimately to Southfield, MI in 1984. As grandparents, this location proved to be ideal and provided great happiness. A 50th wedding anniversary celebration at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, Detroit, MI in 1998 was the highlight of their lives. Family and friends travelled from many locations for this occasion. Elton's life would take a different turn upon the death of his beloved Juanita in March 2002. Upon the sale of his Southfield home, he moved into an independent senior living complex while maintaining close family connections through visits to IL, VA, and MD. These visits kept him busy and allowed him to personally welcome the birth of two great-grandchildren in Beltsville, MD. A birthday milestone occurred on June 24, 2010 when Elton celebrated his 90th birthday with a party hosted by his daughters in Southfield, MI. Once again, friends and family shared in this happy auspicious occasion.
