Charles was the first son of James Doty and Catherine Sauer. He grew up in Cedar County Iowa, but following his fathers death, he traveled extensively. He eventually settled in California, however he is recorded as traveling both to Hawaii (before statehood) and Cuba. He lived with his niece, Verna Riddle, for many years. He usually listed his occupation as a farmer, but in 1885, he claimed to be a lawyer.
