Madeline Hughes Beck
1918 - 1998

Madeline Hughes Beck died Sunday afternoon, October 4, 1998, at Powell County Hospital in Deer Lodge, Montana, after an extended illness.

She was born in Drummond, Montana, to Malcolm and Fern Hughes on November 27, 1918. She lived most of her childhood in Drummond, attending schools and graduating from high school. She then studied bookkeeping and accounting at Kinman Business School in Spokane.

She worked at the Gold Dredge in Bearmouth and for her father's business in Drummond before marrying Marvin Beck in November 1940. She was bookkeeper for Marvin's Texaco until he re-enlisted in the Navy when World War II began. They lived in Long Beach, California, and Philadelphia, moving to Anaconda on completion of his military service.

Madeline was a gifted artist and exercised her talents in many mediums. She began working in metal wire, ceramics, stained glass, woodcarving and jewelry. Her sewing talents produced extraordinary clothing. Many homes in Montana have beautiful oil paintings of flowers, Indians and mountain scenes which she illustrated with perfection.

She thoroughly enjoyed traveling. Her excursions to Europe, Africa, South America, Australia, Alaska, China and Japan produced wondrous photographs and treasures brought home. She was active in "Paintin Place" and the Drummond Museum.

She is survived by her brother, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Hughes, of Stayton, OR; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Beck, of Drummond; Mrs. Ralph Beck, of Deer Lodge; and Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Schmutz, of Napa, CA; special friend Penny Roy; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, and parents, Malcolm and Fern Hughes.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or to a charity of the donor's choice.
