The Rev. Robert South Barrett was raised in Wytheville, VA and was educated at the Norwood School in Nelson County, VA and at the Virginia Episcopal Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA. He graduated in 1876. His first parish in 1876 was Aquia Church in Stafford County, VA where he met and married Katherine Harwood Waller, later the famous Kate Waller Barrett, a social activist and co-founder of the National Florence Crittendon Mission. They had a "marriage of true minds."
From 1877 to 1881, he was the Rector of Christ Church (now gone) in Richmond, VA. From 1881 until 1887 he was the Rector of St. Paul's in Henderson, KY, and from 1887 until 1894 he was the Dean of St. Luke's Cathedral (now St. Luke's Church) in Atlanta, GA. In 1894 he moved to Washington, DC to become General Missioner of the Episcopal Church, a national office. Late in his life, he purchased a house at 408 Duke St., Alexandria, VA that became the longtime family home of his widow and children. He died in Wytheville at the home of his parents.
He was the author of at least three books: "Character Building: Talks to Young Men," "Thought Seed for Holy Seasons," and "A Reason of the Hope." The last was written while he knew he was dying of cancer.
At his memorial service in Atlanta, he was eulogized by a former Episcopal Bishop of Georgia as "a man of whom I have repeatedly said with the utmost candor that he was possessed of more virtues and fewer vices than any man I have ever known."
He and his wife had seven children, one of whom (Withers Waller Barrett) died as an infant and is buried near him as are his parents. His wife, Kate Waller Barrett, and five of their children (Robert South Barrett, Jr., John Barker Barrett, Lila Barrett Alfriend, Reba Barrett Smith, and Kitty Barrett Pozer) are buried at Aquia Church in Stafford County, VA. The sixth, Gen. Charles D. Barrett is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
