He was a Quaker, born in Virginia shortly after the American Revolution. He went west to Ohio and settled in Logan County, near Middleburg. There was a Quaker Meeting House at Darby Creek and the church cemetery became known as the Darby Creek Cemetery or Curl Cemetery. There are numerous Curl family members buried here, including his wife, Huldah Colver Curl. He was married three times. Two of his sons, Harrison and Asa, served in the Civil War in the 17th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. They saw action at Chickamauga, and numerous other battles. Asa was wounded at Resaca, Georgia, but recovered and continued fighting with his unit.

He married again, late in life, to Amelia C. Phifer, widow of Joel Bradley, on 25 September 1864 in Logan County, Ohio, but there were no known children from that marriage; her death and burial location are unknown.
