"Arnie", 51, of San Benito, TX, died Wednesday, Feb. 18,
1998 in San Benito. He was born in Corpus Christi to Frank and Carmen Sosa Alvarez and lived all his life in the Valley.

He was a member of the 1965 Brownsville High School Baseball team who advanced to the state championship. Later he went on to play baseball for The University of
Texas-Pan American Broncs who advanced to the College World Series.

Arnie coached at several schools in the Valley. While coaching at Mercedes,he took the Tigers to the 3A state finals in 1974 and also led the Porter Cowboys to district titles in 1984 and 1985.

He later served as the director of athletics for The University of Texas at Brownsville. He ended his career as the head baseball coach for Weslaco High School. He was a mentor of numerous baseball associations and dedicated his
life to teaching the youth as the president of the Brownsville Big League.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Alvarez Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Cervantes Alvarez of San Benito; a daughter, Amanda Jo Alvarez of San Benito; a son, Frank N. Alvarez of San Antonio; his mother, Carmen R. Alvarez of Corpus Christi; two brothers, Frank
Alvarez III of Fort Worth and Joe O. Alvarez of McAllen; five sisters, Mrs. Joe (Irma) Cantu of Brownsville, Rosey Alcantara, Mrs. Joe (Frances) Alvarez both of Corpus Christi, Mrs. Bill (Ana Maria) Seay of Fort Worth and Mrs. Bud(Janie) Rosamond of Dolores, Colo and Corpus Christi.

Visitation was at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home East Chapel, 945 Palm Blvd. A rosary was said at Christ the King Catholic Church, Brownsville.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at Christ the King Catholic Church with Father Alfonso Guevara officiating. Interment followed at Buena Vista Burial Park.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Cerna, Spencer Sparrow, Javier Gonzalez, brothers-in-laws Joe Cantu, Bill Seay and Joe Alvarez. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Alvarez III, Joe
O. Alvarez, Joe Cervantes, Bud Rosamond, Joey Alvarez, John Gilbert, Pete Vela and Eddie Perez.

Arnie worked as a coach at Porter High School and took them to several championships. He then went to work at Texas Southmost and was there about 8 years. While there he got his masters degree and was also the Athletic Director. He was in his second year at Mission High School as baseball coach when he died. He had remarried on November 30, 1997, and Kathy was a teacher at San Benito ISD. We understand that the college wants to name the sports facility after Arnie but apparently it cannot be done for a certain number of years after the person is deceased.
