Leila (Burnett) Sowell, 95, of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at White Oak Estates.

Born May 30, 1909, in Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late John Roland Burnett and Martha Addie (Kimbrell) Burnett and the wife of the late Heyward Rochelle Sowell.

She attended Central Wesleyan College and was of the Wesleyan Methodist faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy S. Cannon and her husband Ronald Cannon of Spartanburg; a son, Heyward Joel Sowell and his wife Luda B. Sowell of Riverside, CA; eight grandchildren, Kent B. Sowell of Palm Desert, CA, Greg Sowell of Riverside, CA, Gayle Ades of Oceanside, CA, Keith Cannon of Gilbert, AZ, Lisa Grant of Greenwood, Steven Lashway and Darrell Lynn Lashway, both of Fountain Inn, and Mike Lashway of Enoree; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Leila Hayleen "Polly" Sowell Meese (1940-2002) and a grandson, Heyward Joel Sowell, Jr.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Visitation was 1:30-2:45 p.m. Sunday, February 20, 2005, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services followed at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Michael Stepp. Entombment was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Complex.

In lieu of flowers, memorials could be made to the Carlisle Wesleyan Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 16025, Boiling Springs, SC 29316.
