George A. Wheeler. The stroke of paralysis which George Wheeler sustained a week ago Monday proved to be his death blow, although be made some progress toward recovery and few were prepared for the news when it came that he had passed away. The end came last Sunday morning, Dec. 20, at 2:45 o'clock. Although not an old man, being a few days under 61 years of age, Mr. Wheeler had not the vitality to withstand his attack, his life of toil not having helped a naturally rather frail constitution. Mr. Wheeler was born in Lancaster County, Conn., Jan 13, 1843, and came to Illinois when 13 years of sue, locating at Peoria. On Dec 11, 1867, he was married at Yates City to Miss Martha Milan. To them were born seven children, five of whom, with the wife and mother, survive, as follows: Charles E., Frank L, Ida M. Shreves, George L. and Nellie P. The family lived for some years in Blue Ridge township, Piatt County, where Mr. Wheeler engaged extensively in raising blooded stock and built up one of the finest stock farms in that locality. This he sold in 1890 and bought the comfortable home and stretch of acres near the south edge of this city, where he ever after resided, continuing to deal in pedigreed stock on a considerable scale. Probably the most conspicuous work of Mr. Wheeler's life was the founding in 1895 of Maple Grove cemetery, which he placed in the hands of an association, of which he was president, superintendent and one of the directors. Its site adjoins the public highway running south out of this city, high and commanding, well stocked with forest, trees and nicely laid off in drives and walks Its care and improvement have been Mr. Wheeler's principal employment since the lots were first placed on market. In addition to the survivors noted above, Mr. Wheeler leaves his father, Elijah Wheeler, now in his 84th year, who resided with his son most of the time, and the following brothers and sisters: A. W. Wheeler, of Elmwood; H O. Wheeler, of Chicago; N. H Wheeler, of Iowa; Mrs. Ellen Turrell, of Medina. N. Y. Also, a half-sister, Mrs. William Petty, of Canton. The funeral was held in the M. E church on Wednesday afternoon, the local A. F. & A. Masons lodge, of which deceased was a member, attending in a body. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery which deceased had so conscientiously labored to make a fitting place for the last long sleep of our loved ones.
