Dr. O'Donnell's M.D. was from Georgetown University Medical School. He graduated from St. Mary's College (Emmitsburg, Maryland). He was a pediatrician in Washington, D.C., and taught at Georgetown University from 1915 to 1951. While head of pediatrics at Georgetown, he signed medical degrees for two of his sons.
Dr. O'Donnell was the son of William Francis O'DONNELL (1868–1935) and Mary Christine MURPHY (1869–1953). In 1921, he married Gertrude Marie LANE (1892–1955).
During World War I, he served overseas as a Medical Corps captain. He was associated with the pediatrics departments at several Washington, D.C., area hospitals and facilities: Providence, Children's, Suburban, Christ Child Convalescent Home, and St. Ann't Infant Asylum. He was chairman of the Providence Hospital board and chief of the Convalescent Home medical staff.
He was survived by seven children: the Rev. William Francis O'Donnell, Dr. Vincent Lane O'Donnell, Dr. Robert Joseph O'Donnell, Jeanne Marie (Mrs. William) Rapp, John Jude O'Donnell, Hugh Lowe O'Donnell, and Paul Anthony O'Donnell.
He also was survived by ten grandchildren and two brothers.
One son, the Rev. James Jeremiah O'Donnell, assistant pastor of St. Peter's Church, Olney, Maryland, died March 28, 1957. Two other children died as infants: Thomas Lane O'Donnell and Mary Frances O''Donnell.
Funeral mass was at St. Thomas the Apostle Church (27th and Woodley, Washington, D.C.).
