Dave was born to Clare and Velma (Costello) Schuyler on December 14, 1932, in Pomona CA. He was the oldest of three children. He attended St Joseph High School, a former Marianist secondary school in Alameda CA.
After high school, Dave entered the Marianist novitiate at Marcy NY and professed first vows there on September 8, 1951. He attended the scholasticate at Mount St John in Dayton OH and in 1954 earned a bachelor's degree at St Mary's College in Moraga CA. He professed perpetual vows August 15, 1955, in Santa Cruz CA.
Br Dave taught for three years at two Marianist schools in California: Chaminade Preparatory High School in Los Angeles and Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. In 1957, he entered the seminary at the University of Fribourg in Fribourg, Switzerland and was ordained July 17, 1960. Fr Dave continued his education in Europe, earning a Licentiate of Sacred Theology (STL) at the University of Fribourg in 1961 and a JCD (Doctor in Canon Law) in 1964 at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.
For two years after his studies in Rome, Fr Dave served Chaminade College (now Chaminade University of Honolulu) as assistant professor of theology, executive vice president and academic dean.
In 1967, he was named the assistant chancellor and later chancellor and official of the Marriage Tribunal of the Diocese of Honolulu. In the early 1970s, he also served as an administrator and chaplain at the Marianist scholasticate.
In 1974, Fr Dave was named assistant for religious life for the former Province of the Pacific. During this time, he also served as vice president of Chaminade University of Honolulu followed by his appointment as fifth president of the university in 1977. Among his accomplishments during his five years at the university included the establishment of the Chaminade Board of Regents, a major renovation of Eiben Hall and the complete renovation of the old Maurice J Sullivan Library in Henry Hall.
Fr Dave then served for two years with the Diocese of San Jose in California on the Diocesan Tribunal. He returned to provincial administration as assistant for religious life in 1985.
In 1989, Fr Dave was named judicial vicar and co-vicar for religious for the Diocese of San Jose and became a member of the Diocesan Council of Religious. He was commended by Provincial Stephen Glodek, in 2002, for his participation on the Commission of Uniting Provinces, as four former Marianist Provinces in the United States joined as the Marianist Province of the United States in July 2002.
In 2002, he served as adjutant judicial vicar for the Diocese of Monterey. The next year, Fr Dave retired to the Cupertino Marianist Community, where he served as director from 2009 until 2012 and as the Province's area coordinator for California. He had previously served as director of Marianist communities in San Jose and Santa Clara CA.
