John and Ruth were united in marriage, June 25, 1857. In 1858 they moved from Rockwall to Dallas County where they homesteaded and raised a family of seven children. He bought land near Duck Creek when it was mostly raw prairie, built a house and shop where he lived until the house burned in 1920.

The lumber for the house was hauled from Jefferson and Mr. Jacobs built it himself. He also helped in building most of the early day homes in the Duck Creek community, and the lasting quality of his work testified to his honesty and skill in his profession. When not occupied with building he farmed, and had accumulated a large acreage. Mr. Jacobs built a new home to replace the burned one in the spring of 1920.
Ruth Ann Mills Jacobs died August 7, 1898, and was buried in Mills Cemetery. John Clark was buried next to her in 1923. He married Ruth Annie Ballenger Groves in 1901.
Pioneer story submitted by Mr. Jacobs' great granddaughter, Linda Jacobs Looper. November, 2008.
