Warren Sylvanus Bellows, Jr., 78, died Sunday, May 19, 1996. Mr. Bellows was chairman of the board of the W.S. Bellows Construction Corporation and an elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Houston, where he served also as Sunday School teacher and superintendent. Mr. Bellows was born on November 3, 1917, in Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada, and was raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He worked from 1938-40 at W.S. Bellows Construction in bricklaying, engineering, design and estimating and in 1941 as assistant superintendent at Todd California Ship Building Company in Richmond, California. From 1941-46, Mr. Bellows served in the United States Navy in the Civil Engineers Corps as a resident officer at various U.S. Navy construction projects and in Pacific theater construciton battalions. Since 1947, Mr. Bellows had lived in Houston, Texas, and had worked for Bellows Construction. He served as president of the corporation from 1959-78 and as chairman since 1979.
Mr. Bellow was past president (1973) of the Houston chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America, a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Texas Society of Profesional Engineers, and an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects, Houston (1993). He was honored by his alma mater, the University of Texas, in 1978 as a Distinguished Graduate, College of Engineering and in 1994 was presented the Rice Design Alliance Award for Design Excellence. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen-Local #1, the Sons of the American Revolution-Houston chapter, the River Oaks Country Club, the Coronado Club, the Ramada-Tejas Club, the Eagle Lake Rod and Gun Club, and the Jolly Boys Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; and his daughter, Elizabeth.
Mr. Bellows is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Ruth and Warren S. Bellows III, and Laura and Thomas F. Bellows; four grandchildren; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Ann and George F. Bellows, Sanny and Frank W. Bellows and Beverly Crowley James; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, 1996, at the First Presbyterian Church of Houston, 5300 Main Street, Houston, Texas 77004, with Dr. Victor D. Pentz officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the church after the service.
