Esther Laibstain Berent, 83, a lifelong resident of Norfolk, was born in the old Berkley section of the city. She passed away on July 16, 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Berent and her parents, Isadore and Nettie Laibstain.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Stanley and Joy Berent and Drs. Jerry and Rusti Berent. Other surviving family members include her five granddaughters, Melissa Berent and her husband David Almeleh, Alison Berent Spillson and her husband Nate, Rachel Berent, Rebecca Natalie Berent and Jenna Miriam Berent; her sister, Lena Laibstain Goodman and her husband Stanley of Hampton; her brother, Dr. Samuel Laibstain and his wife Ruth of North Wales, Pa.; her brother, Nathan Laibstain and his wife Sarah of Virginia Beach; and many nephews and great-nephews and -nieces as well as many cousins, and she was very proud of all of them.
Esther graduated from Maury High School in the 1938 class and attended Old Dominion University part time. She was appointed secretary to the Provost at Old Dominion University, the late Dr. John B. Johnson Jr., who was the first provost appointed at ODU, and she worked with him for many years. Later, she and her husband established The Point Needlecraft Shop, where they sold fine yarns, needlepoint and other needle arts. She was a member of the National Knitting Guild and taught many people to knit, crochet and needlepoint. In addition, she was a member of the American Contract Bridge League, where she attained the rank of Bronze Life Master. She belonged to many charitable organizations. Much loved, she touched the lives of a great many people and will be missed by all.
A graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery today at 1 p.m. with Rabbi Michael Panitz officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family will receive visitors at 6409 Eleanor Court in Norfolk. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk chapel, is handling arrangements.
