He was born January 26, 1932, in Waterloo, IA to Walter W. and Myrtle Huffman McClain. He married Phyllis Rodemeyer on September 5, 1957. They later divorced. He married Janet Miller Baldridge on July 8, 1989 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.
A graduate of West Waterloo High School in January of 1950, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He received his BA degree from Iowa State Teachers College, now UNI,in June 1959. He taught in high school and junior high at Terril, Forest City and Vinton. He received his MA degree from Kirksville, and served as junior high and middle school principal at the Cardinal Community Schools for 18 years. He also worked 4 years as a teacher for Indian Hills Adult Learning Center, retiring in 2002. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Janet; a son, Daniel(Sherry)McClain of Des Moines; two daughters, Sandra McClain of Des Moines and Laurel Ramsey of Gatlinburg, TN; two step-daughters, Teresa(Dave)Klyn of Ottumwa and Denise Baldridge of Lenexa, KS; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; five step-grandchildren; four sisters, Garnet Eggleston of El Monte, CA, Flavelle(Jim)Woodyard of Evansdale, IA, Jane(Ken)Kellhofer of Tavares, FL, Linda Hill of Lakewood, WA and a brother, Donald(Janet)McClain of Iowa City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Phyllis Shephard and Mardell Ostrander.
Funeral services will be 3 pm Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Shrimplin officiating. Military services will be conducted by O.B.Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Cremtion will follow the services. Inurnment will be in Ottumwa Cemetery at a later date. Visitation begins at 10 am Sunday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5-7 pm Sunday. Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church or Iowa City Hospice, Iowa City, IA.
