Hiram was an Accountant in New Bedford, MA and when he and his brother, Captain Otis Webb, heard the news that gold had been discovered in California, the two of them departed 12-31-1848 on the Barq Carib, arriving in San Francisco June 23, 1849. They set up a store in San Francisco which sold goods to the miners, and made a very good living. Hiram eventually sent for his family, had two more children, then returned to New Bedford to live out the rest of his days.
