Joseph & Helena (Doerr) Imoehl

Married June 15, 1871

Joseph and Helena (Doerr) Imoehl were the maternal grandparents of Rose (Burbach) Sudbeck. Joseph Imoehl was born in Eppe Waldeck, Germany, on March 19, 1843, to Johann Imoehl & Anna Maria (Dessel) Imoehl. In his youth, Joseph worked as a logger on the Rhine and later served in the German army. Before the Imoehl family immigrated to the United States, Joseph was an acquaintance of Rose (Burbach) Sudbeck's paternal grandmother, Maria Theresa (Arens) Burbach. The Arens family immigrated to America 1869.

On June 15, 1871, Joseph married Helena (Doerr) Imoehl in Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Festina, Iowa, with Father Conrad Schulte officiating. Helena was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 29th, 1851. She was the first of ten children born to Wilhelm Doerr & Anna (Druffner) Doerr.

Joseph & Helena farmed between Festina and Ossian, Iowa, in Military Township, Winneshiek County, on land that was originally passed down to Joseph & Helene from Helena's parents, Wilhelm & Anna (Druffner) Doerr. Joseph & Helena eventually sold the farm to their son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Angela Imoehl. The farm was again sold in 1964 to Elmer Bucheit.

The Joseph and Helena (Doerr) Imoehl family were devout Catholics who kept the Sacraments and abided by the tenets of the Catholic faith. Each Sunday, the Imoehl family walked over two miles to the Catholic church in Festina to attend Sunday afternoon vespers.

Joseph and Helena had twelve children.

1. Anna Catherine Imoehl was born in Festina, Iowa, on March 14th, 1872. On February 5th, 1891, Anna married Peter Dohm in Festina, Iowa. Anna and Peter had ten children: Katherine (Mrs. John Schmidt). Mathilda (Mrs. Charles Leffelman), Peter, Ed, Raymond, Ida, Bertha Joan, Pauline Ella, Julianna and Sigmund. Anna Catherine (Imoehl) Dohm died in Norfolk, Nebraska, on April 14th, 1953. She was 81 years old.

2. Joseph William Imoehl was born in Festina, Iowa, on March 4th, 1874. On November 16th, 1897, Joseph married Anna Reifenrath in Wynot, Nebraska. Joseph and Anna had three children: Rose Helen (Mrs. Fritz Pinkelman), Mary, and George. Joseph William Imoehl died in St. James, Nebraska, on September 16th, 1948. He was 74 years old.

3. Emilia Mary Imoehl was born in Festina, Iowa, on August 8th, 1875. On May 15th, 1900, Emilia married Frank Joseph Hemesath in Festina, Iowa. Emilia and Frank had eleven children: Catherine Mary (Mrs. Henry Brodrecht), Anna Helen, Clara Elizabeth, Louis William, Joseph Herman, Amalia Mathilda (Mrs. Molley Brodrecht), Edward Francis, Aloyseous Fred, Frank Edmund, Rose Emilia (Mrs. Raymond Brokrecht), and Helen Emma (Mrs. Walter Jacoby). Emilia Mary (Imoehl) Hemesath died in Pierre, South Dakota, on November 2nd, 1954. She was 79 years old.

4. Clements Conrad Imoehl was born in Festina, on February 26th, 1877. On February 20th, 1906, Clements married Mary Pick. Clements died in St. James, Nebraska, on June 11th, 1917. He was 40 years old.

5. John Henry Imoehl was born in Festina, Iowa, on February 22nd 1880. On February 20th, 1917, John married Anna Dietzenback in Festina, Iowa. John and Anna had three children: Alma, Joseph, and Norbert. John Henry Imoehl died in Ossian, Iowa, on November 11th, 1961. He was 81 years old.

6. Julia Helena Imoehl was born in Festina, Iowa, on June 26th, 1882. On October 12th, 1900, Julia married John Gerlack Reifenrath in Festina, Iowa. Julia and John had ten children Mary Irene (Mrs. Leander Gerleman), Lavina Clara, Helen (Sister M. Aelreda), Rosalia Catherine (Mrs. Francis Wieseler), Barbara Catherine (Mrs. Louie Wieseler), Beatrice Josephine (Mrs. Vincent Waltee), Alphonse Anthony, Agatha Marie (Mrs. John Goeden), Angela Loretta (Mrs. Isidore Gubbels), and Joseph Fred. Julia Helen (Imoehl) Reifenrath died in Wynot, Nebraska, on August 19th, 1978. She was 96 years old.

7. Helena Victoria Imoehl was born in Festina, Iowa, on May 3rd, 1884. On July 6th, 1903, Helena married Louis Burbach in Bow Valley, Nebraska. Helena and Louis had six children: Joseph, Rose Theresa (Mrs. Arthur Sudbeck), Arthur, Florenz, Irene (Mrs. Clarence Suing), and Mary Leona (Mrs. Henry Heine). Helena Victoria (Imoehl) Burbach died in Hartington, Nebraska, on March 4th, 1967. She was 82 years old.

8. Wilhelm Philip Imoehl was born in Festina, Iowa, on May 17, 1886. William died in Festina, Iowa, on October 24, 1902. He was 16 years old. [Wilhelm Philip Imoehl died on October 24, 1892. He was 6 years old.]

9. Mary Catherine Imoehl was born in Festina, Iowa, on May 1st, 1888. On November 21st, 1916, Mary married Fred John Hagemann in Festina, Iowa. Mary and Fred had three children: Cornilia (Mrs. Jimmy Bina), Clarence and Virgil. Mary Catherine (Imoehl) Hageman died in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, on March 31st, 1980. She was 91 years old.

10. Frank Joseph Imoehl [Frank Theodore Imoehl] was born in Festina, Iowa on April 26th, 1890. On February 10th, 1920, Frank married Angela Marie Hagemann in Festina, Iowa. Frank and Angela had eight children: Jerome Joseph, Valeria Maria (Mrs. Gordon Lensing), Eleanora Lucille (Mrs. Pete Franzen), Ralph Elmer, Nilus Philip, Merlin Victor, LaVerne Anthony, and Corrina Agnes (Mrs. Leo Steinlage). Frank Joseph Imoehl died in Ossian, Iowa, on January 19th, 1972. He was 81 years old.

11. Rosa Catherine W. Imoehl [sic/Rosa W. Imoehl] was born in Festina, Iowa, on January 31st, 1893. Rose died in Festina, Iowa, on May 28th, 1903. She was 10 years old.

12. Rosalia Juliana Imoehl was born in Festina, Iowa, on May 17th, 1897. On January 27th, 1920, Rosalia married Nick Hageman in Festina, Iowa. Rosalia and Nick had eleven children: Marcellinus, Florentina, Rita (Mrs. Ervin Wenthold), Lucille (Mrs. John Kruse), Ermin, Edwin, Vera (Mrs. Greg Kriener), Delores (Mrs. Norbert Kuennen), Quentin, Victor and JoAnn (Sister Vernance). Rosalia Juliana (Imoehl) Hageman died in Calmar, Iowa, on November 3rd, 1988. She was 91 years old.

Helena (Doerr) Imoehl died in Festina, Iowa, on February 8th, 1932. She was 80 years old. Joseph Imoehl died in Festina, Iowa, on April 25th, 1934. He was 91 years old. Joseph and Helena are buried in the Catholic cemetery in Festina, Iowa.
