AN UNSOLVED MYSTERY
The Field Museum of Chicago has no documentation concerning the fieldwork of
Carl and his brother Tom ( and Carl's future wife Delia) in producing THE FOUR SEASONS OF THE VIRGINIA DEER, a diorama of 16 deer ( buck, doe, fawn, juvenile) in each of the four seasons (winter, spring, summer, autumn).Tom and Delia are documented as having produced ARTIFICIAL FOLIAGE with Carl's patent device. THE FOUR SEASONS is "assumed" to have been made from start to finish in Chicago, but there is also the notion that the Glidden family of DeKalb, Illinois, provided space for a taxidermy studio. The mother of Carl and Tom was a Glidden, related to Joseph Glidden, of barbed wire fame and fortune. Joe Glidden had invited a teenage Carl Akeley to DeKalb in the 1870s, and Tom's first wife was a Glidden cousin from DeKalb. THE FOUR SEASONS has been on display for over 100 years, but the " back story" is lost and begs to be discovered.
