Last Rites Held For Mr. Joe Actis
Joe Actis, 69, a long time resident of the Mojave area, passed away February 26, 1959 in Mojave Hospital after a short illness.
He was born in Italy and came to the United States about 1914 to settle in Pennsylvania where he worked as a coal miner. Later on, in about 1918, he came to Bakersfield to work for Southern Pacific RR and after a short time transferred to Mojave.
Joe was a resourceful man and practically carved a living out of the desert for his family, working on the railroad and as a miner at the Golden Queen Mine. He also built Actis Camp 7½ miles south of Mojave where he retired several years ago, In 1957 he and Mrs. Actis erected a new home on Backus Road, west of the dump.
Survivors include his widow, Marie, two sons, Reno and Tony of Mojave; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Killian of San Francisco and Mrs. Stella Franklin Jr. of Washington, D.C.; one brother and one sister in Italy and several grandchildren.
Rosary Services were held Saturday, Feb. 28 at 10:00 a.m. Funeral services were held later at Doughty Calhoun O'Meara Chapel, with Howard D. Fench, past president of F.O.E. No. 93, Bakersfield, officiating. Interment was in Union Cemetery, Bakersfield.
