Joe went to France with the 7th Brigade with reinforcements to the 26th Battalion. They held the line in the Ypres section which was regarded as a quiet sector, then they marched down to the Somme where they went on the attack in front of Bapaume.
He was best friends with Robert Allen Roberts from Nambour. Joe was wounded in action in the field in France 5 Nov 1916 and sent to Edmonton Military Hospital. Later he was transferred from 26th Battalion to 1st ADH Bulford. He was promoted to T/Sergeant on 14 Feb 1919 and to ER/Sergeant on 1 May 1919.
Joe married his Scottish bride, Christina Porteaus Young McAdam in St. Vincent Masonic Hall by rites of United Free Church of Scotland in Glasgow on 19 Sept.1919. They returned to Australia on 14 Jan 1920 and Joe was discharged on 21 Sept 1920. They had a son Jim and a daughter Jessie.
