Walter Compton, ex-committeeman
EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - Walter S. Compton, 76, of Cardiff, died Monday at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point. Mr. Compton was a former Egg Harbor Township committeeman. He owned and operated Walter S. Compton Heating and Plumbing in Atlantic City for more than 30 years. More recently he was employed as a plumbing and heating inspector for the City of Ventnor for 10 years. He was an ardent fisherman and outdoorsman.
He was a member of the Atlantic City Spinning Saltwater Club and the Bayview Hunting Club, a past member of the Keystone Masonic Lodge in Linwood, a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, the Crescent Temple, a former member of the Atlantic City Lions Club and a member of the Ventnor-Margate Lions Club. He was also a member of the Atlantic County Master Plumbers Association.
He was a former member of the Board of Education of the Greater Egg Harbor Regional School, a past president of the Tilton Terrace Tenants Association, the Atlantic City Kiwanis Club, and the St. Bernadette's Senior Citizens Club.
He was born in Atlantic City. He was a graduate of the Atlantic City Vocational School.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; a son, Eugene E. of Northfield; a daughter, Joyce Barracliff of Pennsville; a stepson, Frank Parave of Vineland; a stepdaughter, June Weed of Augusta, Ga.; two sisters, Dorothy Weed of Cardiff, and Anna Marie Swan of Ventnor; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Jeffries and Keates Funeral Home, Northfield. Burial will be in Laurel Memorial Park, Pomona.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Northfield United Methodist Church, Northfield.
