John Harvey "Buck" Bates, 70, of Harrisonburg, died Saturday morning at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond. He had been ill six years.

Mr. Bates was born April 18, 1911, in Graniteville, S.C. where he lived his early life, and was a son of the late John Duffey and Josephine Fagan Bates.

He moved to Harrisonburg in 1929 and was a member of Harrisonburg Baptist Church and the Rion-Bowman Veterans of Foreign Wars post 632. He formerly had worked at Bond Lumber Co. and the Kavanaugh Hotel.

Mr. Bates served nine years in the Air Force and was in the European Theater during World War II.

On April 19, 1969, he married the former E. Marie Wilt, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters,Thelma Guthrie of Bridgewater and June Glickman of Shaker Heights, Ohio, a sister Gertrude Rabon, of Graniteville, S.C., three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home by the Rev. T.W. Johnson Jr. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery.
