Mrs. Mattie Bailey Entered Her Rest
Possessed with the true graces of a Christian, and unafraid to follow her Master in the shadows of life's close, Mrs. Mattie Bailey passed peacefully away at her home in the Shiloh vicinity of Taylor County on the morning of the sixth. It was no surprise to her loved ones who gathered about her to know that she was passing for her death was expected, she having been a patient sufferer for three years. Thus like a child going to sleep did this beloved wife and mother pass beyond. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Cox) Shreve, pioneer residents of Virginia, but who preceded their daughter many years ago. She was a Christian of the old fashion kind, true as gold, zealous and staunch in her belief and which showed about her life giving a strong inspiration to all who came in contact with Mrs. Bailey. She was the second wife of James R. Bailey, and to this union five children were born, one dying in infancy and four, Robert Bailey, Bridges Bailey, Mesdames George Hord and Les Durham surviving with their father. Mr. Bailey's children from his first marriage hardly knew the difference between the care of their mother and Mrs. Bailey, she shared with her own and them alike. She knew no difference and sealed each child with the fondness of a true mother in the home. Although she was a member of the Baptist church, her funeral was held by Rev. Henderson at the Shiloh Presbyterian Church on the 8th and the burial took place in Brookside Cemetery. The bereaved children and husband have the sincere sympathy of their many friends in their great loss and may they realize that their loss is mother's gain. ~The News-Journal, Thursday, August 14, 1919

Husband's obit:
Mr. James Robert Bailey, a member of a pioneer family of this county, son of the late Grief Bailey, passed away at his home at Lorain on last Friday at 8 p.m. The deceased was 80 years, 3 months, and 17 days of age, and had been in bad health for the past year, pneumonia developing and he soon passed away. Mr. Bailey was married in 1866 to Eliza Smith and to this union three children were born, of which Mr. Lucian Bailey of Lorain survives. And in 1871 he was married to Mattie C. Shreve who preceded him to the grave a number of years ago. To this union were born five children of which four survive: F. B. Bailey, Mrs. S. L. Durham, R. S. Bailey, all of this county, and Mrs. George Hord of Strawn, Texas. In early life he professed in Christ and joined the Shiloh Church and had been a deacon of that church for thirty years, and as a citizen he was unexcelled, bearing in mind at all times, to help and assist those in need. He was a devout member of his church, taking active work in all church affairs. His departure has cast gloom over the entire community. Funeral services were held at his home Sunday by Rev. B. H. Henderson of Summersville and the remains were laid to rest in Brookside Cemetery in this city. To the bereaved members of the family and the relatives we extend our sincere sympathy. ~News-Journal, January 13, 1921
