Mary Jane Mitchell Allen was born in Greesville County, VA, near Emporia. Married to Algernon Sidney Allen, she moved with her husband to Weldon, NC, when their daughter Mary Florence died in 1891 at the age of 30, leaving behind one child, Florence Allen Hart. After her husband died in the early 1900's, she continued to live with her son-in-law, Millard Filmore (M.F.) Hart, and his second wife, Lula Cato Allen (also her daughter), and granddaughter, Allen, in Weldon. Mary Jane was known to her children and grandchildren as "Ma."

Mary Jane Mitchell and Algernon Sydney Allen had 10 children: Mary Florence (1860-1891), Sallie W. (1862-1862), Algernon Sidney (1864-1948), Lula Cato (1866-1945), Henry Drewry (1869-1947), Eva (1872- ?), Lelia E. (1874-?), Kate (1876-?), Thomas S. (1878 - ?), and Bertha Hart (1884 - 1966).
