Settling in Knoxville about 1791, Carrick was the first preacher in Knoxville and served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, whose congregation included East Tennessee's most prominent citizens including Knoxville's founder James White; Tennessee's Founding Father John Sevier; and US Consitution signer William Blount. He held this concurrently with his presidency of Blount College, which was formed when Carrick Opened a seminary in his home for Knoxville, TN students seeking a classical education in 1792, two years before a bill to establish a college in the territorial capital was introduced. The school transitioned into Blount College, East Tennessee College and eventually the University of Tennessee, which is why Carrick is known as the University's 1st President.
