Virgil Marvin Carter, 76, of Oak Forest, IL and formerly of Pearl, IL, died Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at Symphony of Crestwood in Crestwood, IL. He was born January 19, 1937, near Pearl, the son of Frank and Lillian Carlton Carter.
He is survived by one son, Jerry (Beth) Carter of Oak Forest; two daughters, Joyce Carter of Urbana, IL and Karen (Tony) Sparacino of Plainfield, IL; six grandchildren, Jack, Alexa, Joseph and Isabella Carter, all of Oak Forest and Anthony and Logan Sparacino, both of Plainfield; four sisters, Lorraine Mercer of Albuquerque, NM, Eileen (Charles) Pfeiffer of Erial, NJ, Barbara (Richard) Hall of Pittsfield, IL and Helen (Joseph) Murray of Vancouver, WA; two brothers, Ervin Carter of Pico Rivera, CA and Dale Carter of Milton, IL; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Betty Bland (surviving husband, Leroy of Fosterburg, IL) and Mary Blish; and one brother, Dean Carter (surviving wife, Kathy of Pearl).
Mr. Carter worked as a head signalman for Illinois Central Gulf Railroad in Chicago for 33 years, before retiring in 2002. He spent many years volunteering his time as a coach and umpire with Town of Lake Little League Baseball. Virgil enjoyed going to coffee and visiting with friends.
A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Miller Cemetery, south of Pearl. Family will meet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield.
