John Francis Azevedo 11-01-29 to 02-08-13
John was born 11-01-29 to father Antonio Jose Azevedo and mother Mary Enos in the home on the ranch where he lived his entire life in Maxwell, CA. His father died when he was 9 years old and the family moved to Willows to be closer to family. Returned to the dairy and farmed with his brother Tony (Junior) for many years later adding his children and nephews. Rice harvest was always a family affair met with great anticipation with the end of season being celebrated with a big party.
Juggling school and milking cows, John still found time to play sports in high school. In 1947 he was on the champion football team at Maxwell High School. His interest in sports carried through as a member of the "Ag Cats" on the local softball team. Always ready to support the Maxwell Panthers, attended school games and tournaments especially loving to watch his children and grandchildren play.
Married his high school sweetheart, Carol Freitas on July 12, 1952 and settled on the ranch raising their three children. John was involved with family, friends and community activities. John was very close to his in-laws Hazel and Ernie "Pop" Freitas. For over sixty they shared their lives with devoted care, support, love and many social activities with their circles of friends.
John joined the National Guards in 1948 and served during the Big 1955 Flood in Yuba City.
He was always that hard working farmer: when the ‘dairy was sold in the mid 70's and the ‘girls' left the ranch, he appreciated that the stainless steel pipes found a good home at the Sierra Brewery in Chico.
He was very active with the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Maxwell, and Served as a reader for many years, helped with collections, church maintenance and looked forward to the annual dinners and autumn Bazaar.
John was very proud of his Portuguese heritage and was very involved with the Luso American and Portuguese Fraternal Society Lodges. He delighted in the annual St. Anthony Holy Ghost festa picnic held in Princeton each June. John helped from preparations but his favorite part was putting on his apron and serving the pans of roasted meat side-by-side with his close friends.
John had a love of flying, getting his pilot's license in the early 60s. His great joy was to take his red and white Cessna soaring over Maxwell…solo flights and often joined by family and friends. He was given the nickname "Sky Chief".
John will always be known as a devoted family man a loving husband, caring father. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life. For most he will be remembered for his friendly outgoing nature, his kind helpfulness and a love for life and a beaming smile that touched so many. May Sky Chief soar with peace and honor and his memories are forever held in our hearts.
